When to reach out

When Hervey Bay families and support teams usually get in touch

There is no "bad enough" threshold for behaviour support. If behaviours are making daily life harder or less safe for the person or the people around them, it's worth a conversation.

  • Big moments at home

Meltdowns, aggression or property damage that are starting to shape what the whole family can do together.

  • School is getting harder

Distress at drop-off, school refusal or incidents in class. We can work alongside teachers and school support staff so strategies match at home and at school.

  • Self-injury or unsafe behaviour

When the priority is a safer, calmer and more consistent response from everyone involved.

  • A big change is coming

Starting school, moving house, moving into SIL or a new team of support workers can all unsettle routines.

  • Restrictive practices are in use

You need a compliant behaviour support plan and a clear path to reducing restrictive practices over time.

  • The current plan isn't working

An old plan nobody uses, or a previous provider has left the region. We can review what exists and pick up from there.

Areas we visit

Behaviour support across the Fraser Coast

Hervey Bay stretches along the Esplanade from Point Vernon to Urangan, with Maryborough a short drive inland. We plan visits around where the person actually spends their day, and use telehealth for reviews when travel doesn't make sense.

How it works

What behaviour support in Hervey Bay looks like, step by step

A clear process that meets NDIS Commission requirements, explained in plain language from the first call.

  1. Say hello

Anyone can refer. We chat about what's happening, goals and NDIS funding, then match you with a practitioner.

    Within a few business days
  2. Safety first

If restrictive practices are in use or there's immediate risk, we write an interim behaviour support plan and lodge it with the NDIS Commission.

    Within 1 month, if needed
  3. Understand the why

A Functional Behaviour Assessment through observation, conversations and data across home, school and community.

    Across several visits
  4. A plan people can use

A comprehensive behaviour support plan with proactive strategies, skill-building and safe, consistent responses.

    Within 6 months
  5. Make it stick

Training and coaching for families, teachers and support workers, regular reviews and a progress report before NDIS plan review.

    Ongoing

If there are no restrictive practices and no immediate risk, step two isn't needed and we move straight into the assessment.

Yes. Our registered Behaviour Support Practitioners support participants across Hervey Bay, Maryborough and the wider Fraser Coast, with face-to-face visits and telehealth for reviews.

How long is the wait for behaviour support in Hervey Bay?

Waitlists in regional Queensland can be long. Capability Support Services currently has capacity for new Hervey Bay referrals, and intake is usually completed within a few business days.

Do you visit Maryborough and the smaller towns?

Yes. We visit Maryborough, Howard, Tiaro and the coastal villages such as Toogoom, Burrum Heads and River Heads, combining in-person visits with telehealth so travel doesn't slow support down.

Which part of my NDIS plan pays for behaviour support?

Specialist behaviour support is usually funded from the Improved Relationships budget within Capacity Building supports. Your support coordinator or our intake team can help you check your plan.

What if restrictive practices are already being used?

We develop an interim behaviour support plan within one month and lodge it with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, then work through the Functional Behaviour Assessment towards a comprehensive plan that aims to reduce or remove restrictive practices.
