Positive Behaviour Support

Transforming Lives with Personalised Positive Behaviour Support

Our Specialist Behaviour Support team is dedicated to enhancing the well-being and quality of life for individuals with disabilities by providing targeted support and training. Our goal is to reduce challenging behaviours, improve overall functioning for both individuals, reduce or eliminate the use of restrictive practices and improve their quality of life.

At Capability Support Services, our Specialist Behaviour Support Service employs a holistic, person-centred approach. Our team creates comprehensive behaviour support plans and provides training for individuals with disabilities and their support networks to enhance their well-being and quality of life.

Understanding Positive Behaviour Support in Your NDIS Plan

Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS) involve proactive strategies to improve behaviour and enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. By focusing on understanding the reasons behind challenging behaviours, PBS helps in developing personalised interventions that promote positive changes. Incorporating PBS into your NDIS plan is essential as it provides structured support to manage behaviours effectively, fostering a safer and more supportive environment. Ultimately, PBS empowers individuals to achieve their goals, promoting greater independence and overall well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based, person-centred approach focused on understanding behaviour, improving quality of life and supporting meaningful, lasting change. Rather than simply trying to stop a behaviour, PBS looks at why it may be happening and what changes, skills and supports can make life better for the person.
PBS may be helpful for NDIS participants who experience behaviours of concern, emotional or behavioural dysregulation, difficulties communicating their needs, or challenges that impact their safety, independence, relationships or participation in everyday life.

We start by getting to know the person, not just the behaviour. Your Behaviour Support
Practitioner will learn about your strengths, preferences, communication, environment,
goals and support needs. This may involve conversations, observations, record reviews
and collaboration with the important people in your life.

From there, we work together to understand what may be contributing to behaviours
and develop practical strategies tailored to the individual.

A Functional Behaviour Assessment helps us understand the possible purpose or
function of a behaviour and the factors influencing it. We consider what happens
before, during and after the behaviour, as well as communication, sensory needs, health, environment, relationships, routines and other relevant factors.

This information helps us develop supports based on understanding rather than
assumptions.

A Behaviour Support Plan is an individualised plan that provides practical strategies for
supporting the participant. It may include proactive strategies, communication
supports, skill development, environmental changes and guidance about how others
can respond safely and consistently.

The plan is developed collaboratively and should evolve as the person's needs,
circumstances and goals change.

Where appropriate and with the relevant consent, yes. PBS is often most effective when the people around the participant understand the strategies and feel confident using them. We can provide coaching, education and implementation support to families, carers, support workers and other members of the participant's team.

Yes. Our Behaviour Support Practitioners can assess behaviours of concern, develop behaviour support plans involving regulated restrictive practices where required, support reduction and elimination strategies, provide implementation support and work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders.

Our approach prioritises the participant's rights, dignity, safety and quality of life, with a strong focus on reducing reliance on restrictive practices wherever possible.

Yes. Our practitioners work with participants with a broad range of presentations and support needs. We recognise that behaviour can be influenced by many interacting factors, so our approach considers the whole person rather than looking at behaviour in isolation. Our approach prioritises the participant's rights, dignity, safety and quality of life, with a strong focus on reducing reliance on restrictive practices wherever possible.

Absolutely. PBS often benefits from multidisciplinary collaboration. Where appropriate, our Behaviour Support Practitioners can work alongside psychologists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physiotherapists and other professionals to better understand the participant's needs and create a coordinated approach to support.

Support can be provided in the environment that best meets the participant's needs. This may include the participant's home, school, supported accommodation, community settings or via telehealth.

Seeing the participant in their everyday environments can also help us understand what is happening in real life and develop strategies that are practical for the people supporting them.

No. Reducing behaviours of concern may be one part of PBS, but it is not the whole picture. Good PBS should also focus on building communication, independence, choice, relationships, participation, emotional regulation and opportunities to live a meaningful life.

There is no one-size-fits-all timeframe. The length and intensity of support depends on the participant's needs, goals, complexity and circumstances. PBS is an ongoing process of assessment, implementation, monitoring and review rather than simply producing a Behaviour Support Plan.
Getting started is simple. Submit a referral to Capability Support Services and our team will contact you to discuss your needs, funding and preferred supports. We welcome referrals from participants, families, nominees, Support Coordinators and other professionals.
