Our occupational therapists are registered NDIS providers delivering 100% mobile, in-home services across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and South East Queensland. This article reflects current clinical practice and NDIS guidelines as at June 2026.

What Is In-Home Occupational Therapy?

In-home occupational therapy means exactly what it sounds like - your occupational therapist comes to your home, rather than you travelling to a clinic. At Capability Support Services, this is not an add-on or a special request. It is how we operate. Every OT on our team is a mobile therapist, and home-based delivery is built into how we support NDIS participants across the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

For many people - especially children, older adults, people with mobility limitations, and anyone managing complex daily routines - getting to a clinic appointment can be one of the biggest barriers to accessing therapy. In-home OT removes that barrier completely, while also giving the therapist a far more accurate picture of how someone actually lives, moves, and copes day to day.

The bottom line: A bathroom is a bathroom, a kitchen is a kitchen - but only when an OT sees your bathroom and your kitchen can they recommend something that will actually work for you. That is the core advantage of in-home occupational therapy.

Why In-Home OT Often Works Better

Occupational therapy is, by definition, about helping people do the everyday activities ("occupations") that matter to them - showering, cooking, getting dressed, playing, working, moving safely around the home. Almost all of these activities happen in the home. So it makes sense that assessing and treating them in the home produces better results.

🎯

Real Environment, Real Results

The OT sees the actual stairs, doorways, bathroom layout, kitchen bench height, and flooring - not a generic clinic setup. Recommendations are specific to your space and your life.

🚗

No Travel Stress

No driving, parking, or public transport. This matters enormously for participants with mobility limitations, sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or complex medical equipment.

👶

Better for Children

Children engage more naturally in their own home, with their own toys and routines. Therapy in a strange clinic room often does not reflect how a child actually behaves day to day.

👨‍👩‍👧

Family and Carer Involvement

Parents, partners, and support workers can be part of the session naturally, learn strategies in context, and ask questions about real situations as they come up.

🛁

Accurate Home Modification Reports

If the goal involves grab rails, ramps, or bathroom modifications, the OT needs to measure and assess the actual space. This cannot be done properly in a clinic.

📅

Fits Around Your Routine

Sessions can be scheduled around school pick-ups, medication times, naps, or work commitments - rather than the participant fitting their life around a clinic timetable.

In-Home OT vs Clinic-Based OT

Both delivery models are valid NDIS supports, and some assessments genuinely benefit from specialist clinic equipment. But for the majority of everyday OT goals, here is how the two compare:

In-Home OT

Capability Support Services Model

  • Therapy happens in the real environment
  • No travel time or cost for the participant
  • Accurate home modification assessments
  • Family and carers naturally involved
  • Reduces no-shows and missed appointments
  • Ideal for children, older adults, and complex needs
Clinic-Based OT

Traditional Model

  • Generic clinical setting, not your space
  • Requires travel, parking, and time off
  • Home modification advice based on description only
  • Family often not present during session
  • Missed appointments more common
  • May suit assessments needing specialist equipment

Capability Support Services is a "we come to you" provider by design. Whether you need paediatric OT, an adult functional assessment, sensory profiling, or a home modification report - our therapists bring the assessment and the therapy to your front door.

Who Benefits Most From In-Home OT?

While every NDIS participant can benefit from in-home occupational therapy, it is particularly valuable for:

  • Children - especially those with autism, sensory processing differences, or anxiety, who engage better in familiar surroundings
  • Older adults - including those managing Parkinson's disease, dementia, stroke recovery, or general age-related decline who find travel exhausting or risky
  • People with physical disabilities - where transferring into a vehicle and travelling adds unnecessary fatigue and risk
  • Participants needing home modification assessments - bathroom, kitchen, ramp, or doorway modifications must be assessed on-site
  • People with significant anxiety or sensory sensitivities - for whom unfamiliar clinic environments can be a barrier in themselves
  • Families wanting to be actively involved - parents and carers can learn strategies hands-on, in the spaces where they will use them
  • Rural and regional participants - where the nearest allied health clinic may be hours away

What to Expect From Your First In-Home OT Visit

If you have never had an occupational therapist visit your home before, here is what the process looks like with Capability Support Services:

Initial Contact

Call us on 1800 299 399 or fill out our contact form. No referral needed. Our intake team confirms your NDIS funding and discusses your goals so we can match you with the right OT.

Booking a Convenient Time

We schedule the home visit around your routine - whether that means after school, during nap time, or whenever works best for your household.

The OT Arrives at Your Home

Your therapist arrives at the agreed time. The first visit is mostly about building rapport, understanding your goals, and observing the relevant parts of the home - this could be the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, entryways, or outdoor areas depending on your referral reason.

Assessment and Goal Setting

The OT may use standardised assessment tools, observe daily tasks, and talk with family members or support workers present. Together, you set clear, meaningful goals.

Ongoing Therapy Sessions

Follow-up visits build skills, implement strategies, and track progress - all in the environment where those skills actually need to be used.

Reports and Recommendations

Where needed, your OT prepares written reports - functional capacity assessments, home modification reports, or assistive technology recommendations - to support your NDIS plan.

Is In-Home OT Covered by the NDIS?

Yes. In-home occupational therapy is funded the same way as clinic-based OT - under the Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living category of your NDIS plan. There is no special category for "mobile" or "in-home" services.

The NDIS Pricing Arrangements do allow providers to charge for a therapist's travel time and mileage in certain circumstances, in addition to the session fee. Capability Support Services is transparent about any travel-related charges upfront, and invoices your plan directly - there is no out-of-pocket cost for NDIS-funded sessions.

ItemNDIS CategoryNotes

Want to check your plan before booking? Call us on 1800 299 399 - our intake team can review your NDIS plan categories and explain exactly how in-home OT will be funded for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

In-home occupational therapy is when a qualified occupational therapist travels to a participant's home, rather than the participant travelling to a clinic. The OT delivers assessments and therapy sessions in the person's real living environment - which is often more accurate and effective than a clinic-based session.

Yes. In-home occupational therapy is funded under the Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living category of your NDIS plan, the same as clinic-based OT. Travel costs for the therapist may also be charged in line with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements. Capability Support Services invoices your plan directly.

Capability Support Services provides in-home occupational therapy across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and surrounding South East Queensland suburbs including Coomera, Helensvale, Pimpama, Ormeau, Southport, Robina, Burleigh, Beenleigh, and Logan. Telehealth is available for participants outside these areas.

No referral is required. If occupational therapy is funded in your NDIS plan, you can contact Capability Support Services directly to book a home visit. Our intake team can also help you check your plan funding if you are unsure.

The first visit usually involves the occupational therapist getting to know the participant, discussing goals with the participant and their family or carers, and observing the home environment relevant to those goals. This might include the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, entryways, or outdoor areas depending on the referral reason. The OT will then begin building an individualised therapy or assessment plan.

In-home OT takes place in the participant's actual living environment, meaning the therapist can assess real barriers - stairs, bathroom layout, kitchen bench heights, flooring, lighting - and recommend modifications or strategies specific to that space. Clinic-based OT uses a generic clinical setting which may not reflect the participant's day-to-day reality. For many goals, particularly home modifications, daily living skills, and paediatric therapy, in-home OT produces more accurate and practical outcomes.
